The Edge Pavilion

Back to project page

Milton Common occupies a cherished open expanse within the picturesque Langstone Harbour, rendering it a valuable asset in Portsmouth. Originally a reclaimed area, painstakingly transformed from the sea, it has evolved into a bustling hub for local residents partaking in a diverse array of recreational activities.

The concept behind the Pavilion was deeply influenced by the intriguing relationship between human activity within the site and the captivating bird-watching experiences around Swan Lake. Our concept seeks to seamlessly blend the presence of both birds and people in and around Milton Common. We’ve devised a controlled loop of timber frames that encourages wildlife enthusiasts and all other visitors to traverse the area while enjoying glimpses of the natural surroundings.

Beyond its primary role as a bird-watching spot, the Pavilion also engages directly with sunlight, thanks to the strategic spacing of its 50 varying-sized elements. The rhythmic arrangement of interwoven panels creates a mesmerising interplay of light and shadow, casting dynamic patterns onto the ground and the surrounding environment. These captivating shadow projections evolve throughout the day, adding an ever-changing dimension to the site. The Pavilion’s graceful curvature and the repetition of timber panels elevate it into a work of sculptural art.

Recognising that only around 30% of individuals frequent Milton Common for bird-watching purposes, our design ensures that those with diverse interests can relish the breathtaking views in this exceptional setting.
